Auto Emergency Flashlights

Although it’s extremely handy to have a flashlight almost anywhere, there are a few extra things to consider when purchasing a flashlight for your car. Before making your selection, consider the size, the way it’s powered, and how long you can expect it to last. You definitely don’t want to be walking along a dark road for help and have your flashlight die on you. You also don’t want to buy a flashlight that’s so large that you’ll remove it from your car when you need extra space (and then promptly find yourself needing it).

10-Year Glovebox Flashlight
Price: $49.95

At almost $50, this one’s a little expensive for some, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a more heavy-duty consumer flashlight. While a lot of flashlights have either traditional bulbs or LEDs, this one allows you to switch between an extremely bright Xenon beam or 3 LEDs (to save battery life). It also comes with a couple of lithium batteries.

Pros:

  • Lifetime warranty
  • Multiple beam selection
  • 10-year shelf life
  • Water resistant.

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Doesn’t appear to be rechargeable

Nightstar Shake Flashlight
Price: $29.95.
..
If you’re one of those people with dozens of gadgets filled with dead batteries, you might prefer this Shake Flashlight instead. According to its sales page, 30 seconds of shaking is enough to generate 20 minutes of LED light. It’s also virtually indestructible, which is proven in the product’s video. They drop it in water, bury it in snow, and run it over with a car. The only test that manages to destroy it is the sledgehammer.
.
Pros:

  • The copper wiring and magnet won’t corrode (as batteries can)
  • Minimal effort required to get light
  • Glow-in-the-dark switch
  • Waterproof

Cons:

  • It’s a single-tasking product.
  • Xenon and multi-LED lights may be brighter.
